CASE STUDY: WOOLWORTHS
Supermarket chain Woolworths, which employs 191 000 staff, is using innovative ways to attract and retain women employees through flexible work, job redesign and leave arrangements. Over the past few years it has introduced a number of measures to help, including paid maternity leave, retention strategies and a range of flexible work arrangements for the management ranks. HR director, Kim Schmidt, says Woolworths’s motivation for transforming work practices was attracting and retaining skilled employees as the business grew.
‘We had a lot of women in the business but when we looked at the senior level we didn’t,’ Schmidt says. ‘The things we put in place were around flexibility and retaining women who were returning from maternity leave, and we started attracting more female talent into the business.’
These days men are also using flexible work arrangements. And Schmidt says it’s clear to her that employees working on flexible hours are not only well organised, but often the most productive people.
